Hidden scar brachioplasty
Hidden scar brachioplasty (posterior medial scar brachioplasty - example 3 mo postop photo above)
The main problem with the traditional brachioplasty is the scar. A simple search on many plastic surgeon’s websites show many traditional brachioplasties. The main negative aspect of the result is the scar. The arms look great, the scars are often very wide and noticeable. Now, silicone gel sheeting used for the first three months after surgery, can help the scar outcome. But it is still present and visible.
In recent years a Brazilian plastic surgery group published a new technique for brachioplasty; the posterior medial scar technique. The idea of this surgery is to perform the same brachioplasty, however, to have the scar in an ideal location. When you reach out to shake someone’s hand, the scar can’t be seen. When your arm is down by your side, and someone is looking from your back, they can’t see the scar. The scar is visible if you lift your arm above your head. Most arm positions, the scar is very hard to see. The arm contour is still the same great result as the traditional brachioplasty but with a hidden scar.
