Our In-Office Types of Peel Solutions

There are several types of chemical peels offered by our office. The strength used will be determined based on the skin condition of the patient, as well as the aesthetic goals and desired downtime. Our office offers the following peels:

  • Superficial/Light Peel (SkinCeuticals Micropeel Plus Sensitive Skin Solution or PCA Sensi Peel): Our mildest peel is great for sensitive skin or first time peel patients who want to exfoliate dead skin, unclog pores, hydrate and improve skin tone and texture. There is usually no “downtime” or flaking with this peel. This peel can also be combined with dermaplaning. Usually, multiple treatments are recommended to get the best possible results.
  • Personalized Superficial Chemical Peel (Ultra Peel I, Ultra Peel Forte, PCA with Hydroquinone & Resorcinol):
These peels provide a more customizable approach to treating your skin. It provides a combination of acids used for patients experiencing mild skin imperfections resulting from acne, skin aging and sun exposure. It also targets fine lines, uneven tone and texture. Peeling typically starts 2-3 days after procedure and can last 2-5 days. For optimal results a series of peels are recommended to notice most improvement. Please consult with our Physician Assistant to determine if this peel is right for you.
  • Advanced Chemical Peel (PCA 6% Retinol Peel): This retinol peel provides dramatic and rapid rejuvenation of the skin. Skin is visibly smoother, brighter and more even toned. This peel does have some downtime.  Peeling typically starts 2-3 days after procedure and can last up to 7 days. For optimal results, a series of peels are recommended to notice most improvement. Please consult with our Aesthetician to determine if this peel is right for you.
  • The Ultimate Treatments (20-35% TCA Peels) Resurfacing Medium Depth Chemical Peel): Medium Depth Chemical Peel  These are the strongest chemical peels we perform and are used for deeper wrinkles, and more serious skin irregularities like actinic keratosis (pre-cancers).  These ultimate treatments are for patients seeking optimal skin health improvement more rapidly. High-strength TCA is used to penetrate the deeper layers of skin. Since this peel is deeper,  generally some form of oral anesthesia can be used.  There is more social downtime in the first week immediately following this procedure. Following the peel, the skin will be red comparable to a severe sunburn. The entire face will be swollen. Intense peeling will occur on days 2-4 and social downtime can last 1 week.

It addresses deep acne scarring, excessive wrinkles and more serious skin irregularities like actinic keratosis. You will have moderate downtime with these treatments as described above in the medium depth chemical peel. All include a follow-up skin analysis.

What to Expect

Patients should arrive to appointment wearing no makeup. Skin will be prepped prior to chemical peel treatment and applied to area(s) of concern. The entire process can take up to one hour, which includes photos, reviewing pre/post instructions and administering treatment. Patient compliance is expected in order to achieve best results.

Regardless of the peel used, the overall procedure is similar. The skin will be cleansed thoroughly and the chemical solution will be applied to the face. This process takes just a few minutes and a handheld fan is used to help decrease discomfort. During a light peel, the skin will tingle during treatment. A medium peel will produce a bit more discomfort, and a deep peel will require a numbing agent or anesthesia. The differences between the peels are the type of solution used, the number of steps taken during the actual procedure, as well as the amount of solution that is applied. A soothing ointment will be applied to the skin after the treatment. In the days that follow, the skin will begin to naturally flake and peel away. Patients should avoid picking at the skin or trying to speed up the peeling process in any way because this can result in scarring. Patients should avoid sun exposure and keep their skin protected at all times.
