About Mole Removal

Thousands of men and women have moles in unwanted areas of their body like the face, chin, or neck. There are multiple reasons for this occurrence, such as sun exposure and genetics. However, it can cause individuals to feel embarrassed or self-conscious about their body. Board-certified Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Theodore T. Foley, is proud to offer mole removal at Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery of Central Pennsylvania in Camp Hill, PA. This procedure surgically removes unsightly moles from various areas of the body. If you have a mole or multiple moles that need to be removed, Dr. Foley will be happy to consult with you to create a personalized treatment plan.

Best Candidates

You are a great candidate for mole removal surgery if you are in good health and:

  • Have one or more moles on your body
  • Wish to remove your moles
  • Feel embarrassed by your moles
  • Constantly try to hide your moles
  • Avoid taking pictures

What To Expect

Excision and shaving are the two most common techniques used to remove moles. During excision, the mole will be surgical removed or cut, but this may require stitches that leave a small scar. The shave method utilizes a scalpel to scrape or cut the mole and does not require stitches. Treatment methods will be dependent on the depth, location, and number of moles you have. During your consultation, the surgeon will discuss the best and most optimal course of treatment. The overall goal is to safely remove moles from unwanted areas to create a smooth, clear appearance. The length of the procedure is determined by your condition, but commonly takes 30 – 60 minutes.

Other Considerations

Before undergoing mole removal surgery, you should consult with your doctor on the best methods for treatment. Although excision eliminates unsightly moles, it may leave behind a scar that is sometimes larger than the mole. Most patients receive scar revision surgery to reduce the appearance of mole scarring. Typically, patients prefer the shave method because it removes raised moles without scaring but it could leave behind the pigmented appearance of a mole. It’s important to inform yourself about both procedure options and to have realistic expectations. Mole removal surgery does not prevent future moles from occurring or moles that have been removed from potentially reoccurring.
